Early voting for Sept. 9, 2025, 11th Congressional District Special Election

Early voting begins Friday, July 25, at 1 p.m.for the  11th Congressional District Special Election; Election Day is September 9, 2025.

The special election for Virginia's 11th Congressional District is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9. However, early voting for this election begins on Friday, July 25, and concludes on Sept. 6. 

The election is to fill the vacancy in the 11th Congressional District caused by the death of  U.S. Rep.Republican Stewart L. Whitson,  candidate for U.S. Congressional District VA-11  Gerald E. “Gerry” Connolly on May 21.

Democrat James R. Walkinshaw of Merrifield and Republican Stewart L. Whitson of Great Falls face each

 

other for the Congressional seat. Virginia's 11th Congressional District comprises most of Fairfax County and the entirety of Fairfax City.


Only residents of the 11th Congressional District are eligible to vote in the Special Election. Go to the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal to verify your eligibility to vote in this election. * Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Pkwy, Conference Room 7, Fairfax, VA. Monday – Friday: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays, Aug. 30, Sept. 6,  9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Closed  Monday, Sept. 1, Labor Day.

* North County Governmental Center, 1801 Cameron Glen Drive, Reston. Monday – Friday: 1 p.m. – 7

Other Key Dates and Details:

* July 25—Early in-person voting and first vote-by-mail ballots are mailed.

* Aug. 29, 5 p.m.—Is the deadline to apply for a ballot to be mailed to you.  Apply for an absentee ballot online using the Citizen Portal.

* Sept. 2— Is the deadline to either register to vote (aside from same-day registration) or update an existing registration. After Sept. 2, 2025, voters may register and vote in person using a provisional ballot through Election Day, Sept. 6. Contact your local registrar’s offices for more information. 

* Sept. 6—Early in-person voting closes at 5 p.m.

* Sept. 9, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. — The polls are open. Same-day registration is only available at your precinct polling place, where you will need to complete a provisional ballot. Learn More

* Sept. 9 — Postmark deadline for ballots returned by mail; they must be received by noon on Sept. 12.
