ZDF German Television, the German PBS station, came to film our farmers market on Oct. 25, as a part of a one-hour documentary on the state of the U.S. at the mid-term elections, aired in Germany on Oct. 29. Their message, as they showed our market’s ambiance: The farmers market movement (which has grown by 70 percent over the last two years), is a “back to the roots” movement that connects people with the origins of the food they eat and with their local community.

Our farmers market website uses the metaphor of “radish” with its roots, root ball, and green leaves to express our mission: Heritage (the roots) - the historic roots of those who have lived in Great Falls before us give our village value and meaning – the deep roots in agriculture inform who we are, as seen in our farmers market logo. Home, (the root ball) – our home is where we nestle and gather strength day by day. Habitat (the green leaves) – the sprouts of nature capture the sun and water as nourishment to sustain life – we absorb the warmth and sharing in our community and are enriched by these connections.

The winter season is in full swing as we look forward to the winter market, which opens indoors at the Old Forestville Schoolhouse at 9812 Georgetown Pike, beginning on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Our entire community expresses its gratitude to Domus, LLC (our dear neighbor, Jorge Kifory) for allowing the farmers market to use the Walker Road parking lot for the sixth year. We can all see the incredible thoughtfulness that was expressed in making the parking lot safe for pedestrians, encouraging a positive connection between the two village shopping areas. We are truly blessed to be beneficiaries of such consideration, thoughtfulness and generosity. We will return to the parking lot in the spring. We are a year-round market, so come visit us indoors as we hunker down for the winter.

The winter season opens on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Old Forestville Schoolhouse at 9812 Georgetown Pike.
